Preparing for 2026

I think it is always good to have plans and what better time of the year than now.

So, what am I planning on doing in the coming year.

I want to complete some of the courses that I have started, or have purchased. The main ones are the ones that I have from ThinkSpace Education as I really like them and think that they are very well presented and taught.

There are four courses from ThinkSpacethat I am looking at currently.

  • Mastering Orchestral Composition with Spitfire Audio
  • Foundations of Music Making
  • Getting started with Songwriting
  • How to write Music

I am also looking at a few books to work on.

One of them is (paid link) Composing Music: A New Approach by William Russo which is very much a workbook, and I want to follow it as such, making use of all of the exercises to gain as much as I can from it.

The next book I will probably look at is (paid link) Harmonic Practice in Tonal Music by Robert Gaudlin. This also looks to have plenty of exercises that I can do and a very wide coverage of topics.

Aside from those things I will be working on the exercises for all of the books and for the course assignments and any other personal composition projects or experiments to aid in my learning.

I have often made the mistake of racing through a book, not actually doing the exercises, convincing myself that I will return to them someday and of course, never doing so. I would like to turn over a new leaf this year and start actually doing the exercises and practice that will allow me to assimilate and absorb the information in this learning resources. That combined with personal experimentation based upon things being learnt should help me to progress through 2026.

Think that should at least give me a few things to be going on with, certainly six months, if not all year. I will, I am sure, slip a lot of other things into that as they arise.

What are your plans for 2026?
