Another great book. I really enjoy reading about the recording of The Beatles music and I have great respect for George Martin as being very much involved in the creative process with the Beatles.

Summer of Love: The Making of Sgt. Pepper is a revealing behind-the-scenes account of how the innovative Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album was created from the producer’s standpoint. George Martin gives a breakdown of the album’s creation looking at each of the tracks individually. There are many technical insights and abundant personal anecdotes.

It is fascinating to read about how the technical restrictions of recording equipment and standard methods at the time were overcome and blown apart. Reading about who contributed what to each song and the development of an initial idea into the lush, finished articles. The many contributions of George Martin are revealed, showing his role as much more than simply a producer. His classical training was invaluable in aiding the band to bring to life what they heard in their heads.

In addition to revealing much about the band’s personal interactions it also gives great insight into how the album, and the band, fit into the societal milieu of the time. The world was going through many changes at the time.

Seeing the technical and creative process involved in such a pivotal album provides much to the aspiring musician, producer, whatever.

I have several books about George Martin, and I find both his personal story and that of his role as the Beatle’s producer to be fascinating. He also produced Jeff Beck’s ‘Blow by Blow’, another favorite of mine.
