I have not much to report today as I have life stuff to take care of and so will not be able to devote much time to musical things.
I have started trying to look at different chord progressions to expand my knowledge and vocabulary.
So where to start?
I decided that I would begin to look at some basic jazz chord progressions as my knowledge there is weak. I want to understand all these fancy chord extensions and added and altered tones and how they fit together in actual real-world chord progressions that I can make use of in compositions.
I spent a few minutes this morning exploring some standard jazz progressions and looking at some different chord voicings.
I looked at the following progressions in a very cursory manner, just to familiarize myself with the basic progressions
- ii V I – Dm7 G7 Cmaj7
- I vi ii V – Cmaj7 Am7 Dm7 G7
- iii vi ii V – Em7 Dm7 Am7 G7
It was interesting to look at these and hear how they sound using different chord voicings and inversions.
I will have to explore more.
