Module 4 Assignment Progress

As mentioned in a previous post I am working on the module 4 assignment for the Mastering Orchestral Composition with Spitfire Audio course from ThinkSpace Education.

I am finding this a little daunting thus far.

As you will recall, if you read that post the objective is to write a two-minute piece that tells a story based on one of the basic story outlines provided.

I have chosen my story and have been trying to flesh out the story into different scenes that will require the evocation of specific feelings and emotions. One of things that I am struggling with is that I can create a story but then I cannot nail down an individual emotion or feeling that I would represent as I can imagine several different ones for each of the scenes.

I guess I will need to make some decisions on what emotions and feelings are likely to be most prominent in each situation and look at how to evoke those through the music.

Once I can determine what the different emotions and feelings that I am trying to evoke in each ‘scene’ are then I can begin to sketch out the piece.

So far, I have parts where I shall want to evoke

  • Loneliness tinged with sorrow
  • Joy and happiness
  • Suspense
  • Action
  • Fear
  • Being lost and confused
  • Sorrow
  • Uplifting triumph

I am sure that I will also identify more that I want to represent, but maybe that is enough to go on with for now.

Then it will be creating those sections and piecing them together, ordering them appropriately, developing them, transitioning between them and trying to create a coherent whole.
