Introduction

Understanding diatonic seventh chords in minor keys is essential for harmony, composition, and improvisation. Unlike the major scale — which produces the same set of seventh‑chord qualities in every key — the minor system contains three different scale forms, each generating its own unique harmonic palette.

This allows us greater opportunities to provide harmonic interest in our compositions.

Minor Scales

We can remember from the tutorial on minor scales that there are multiple minor scales

  • Natural Minor
  • Harmonic Minor
  • Melodic Minor

This means that we will have an abundance of different seventh chords across the three different minor scales.

Diatonic Seventh Chords

As we learned in the tutorial on constructing seventh chords and the tutorial on the major scale diatonic chords we build our seventh chords by stacking three thirds.

We start on each successive scale degree and construct a chord of three stacked thirds, using only the notes of the scale to build our diatonic seventh chords.

We shall look at each of the minor scales in turn and the diatonic seventh chords that are produced in each minor scale.

Natural Minor

Scale formula:1 – 2 – ♭3 – 4 – 5 – ♭6 – ♭7

Because the natural minor scale contains no raised scale degrees, its seventh chords resemble those of the major scale but shifted into a darker, modal color.

Key Characteristics

– No leading tone → no true dominant function (v⁷ is minor).

– Strong modal sound (Aeolian).

– Common in folk, rock, film, and modal jazz.

Final Thoughts

As can be seen there are a lot of variations that can be produced by the diatonic seventh chords of the three different minor scales. Your ear will determine what works in any given context.
