I enjoyed this book immensely. It was well written and provided lots of information on Arnold Schoenberg and his life and music. It was interesting to hear the author’s view as to why Schoenberg matters, given the lack of public exposure to his works.
Charting Schoenberg’s journey through his works and the development of the twelve-tone system, and the fact that he was not a one trick pony but used everything at his disposal to compose in the way that he wanted to compose. He composed for himself to provide the world with the music that he heard.
Shoenberg’s struggles to survive financially and to get his music heard were illuminating and the many Shoenberg quips were fascinating, giving great insight into his character and his approach to composition.
(paid link) Shoenberg: Why He Matters by Harvey Sachs is a great book.
I have several of the books that Schoenberg wrote that I am yet to read but given his reputation as a teacher I am greatly looking forward to them.
