Writings on Music, 1965 – 2000, by Steve Reich, edited by Paul Hillier was an interesting read. I enjoyed reading about the composer’s life and his works.
It was interesting to read about his studies with obscure tribes and investigations into far from familiar musical fields in the West, and how he applied them in his own works.
There is a wealth of information, in his own words, about the different rhythms, instrumentation, and techniques that he employed, on many occasions invented.
The many examples of score parts helped elucidate the descriptions of the music and the ideas and though processes involved in their development.
I confess that I was not very familiar with his work prior to reading this book, okay I had never heard of him, but this prompted me to look at some of his works, particularly, as a guitar player, electric counterpoint, but also many of the other examples that were cited in the book.
What do you think of minimalistic music?
