(paid link) Harmony in Popular Music: Tonal, Modal and Negative Harmony in Modern Music by Alfonso Girardo was an interesting and informative read. Some of the information was a bit above my experience level, but the book was very complete covering myriad topics in the realm of modern harmony as approached in modern music.
Starting with major and minor diatonic harmony, the book progressed to explore modal harmony.
There was significant treatment of chord construction and the creation of multi voice chords and chord extensions and substitutions.
There was a significant emphasis on harmonic functions and cadences and chord arrangement and voicings in a variety of parts.
I learnt about a lot of different facets of harmony and there were numerous examples from jazz standards of different ways to harmonize.
I enjoyed the section on polychords and how different voicings can work to retain the essential parts of polychords.
There was also a very interesting discussion of negative harmony, something that I had not really been exposed to before.
I enjoyed reading this book and have hopefully picked up some things that I can make use of in the future.
I would recommend (paid link) Harmony in Popular Music by Alfonso Girardo to anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of modern harmony and its use in popular music.
