I Want to Keep you in Suspense

I have been working on my latest assignment for the Mastering Orchestral Composition with Spitfire Audio course from ThinkSpace Education.

The challenge was to develop a piece that keeps the listener in suspense.

I have completed it but am not sure if it has gone too far into the realms of horror, or tense anticipation or some other mood.  I would appreciate any comments. What kind of feeling does this evoke in you.

The first part of the piece was provided; the latter part was development of that original piece.

The sort of things that I was looking to incorporate were

  • Drones
  • Dissonances – min 2nd and tritones
  • Irregular rhythms
  • Dynamic shifts
  • Sudden orchestral shrieks

I do not know if I achieved it, but this is what I have. Comments very welcome. I hope that it fills you with suspense, but I am waiting in suspense to hear.

I am now looking forward to the next assignment, the module 4 closing assignment which will be a 2-minute piece that tells a story.

    I didn’t think it went too far into horror. It could be used for any suspenseful scene.

      As a teacher of language I am always attracted by unique names. We studied ionisation in science. You are Ionia .. I think causing ionisation of ideas 🙏

        Oh definitely, it really helps to have feedback when composing, it’s hard to know if others perceive your own music the same way sometimes. I often find myself wondering.

    Yes, I hear the suspence. It did not remind me of horror. I got the picture of Space Travel into the unknown. At first it was anticipation, what will we find? Then toward the end with the shrieks, I feel the astonishment of “what is this?” is this something we should be afraid of? Good job!
