I have just finished the ThinkSpace Education How to Write Music course which was very interesting and informative.
It was good to have a structured course on the elements of writing music and the pillars of writing music
- Harmony
- Melody
- Rhythm
- Structure
- Texture
The course was very well presented by Guy Michelmore and there were plenty of interesting videos to accompany the course text.
It concentrated on a subset of these pillars with the ‘big three’
- Harmony
- Melody
- Rhythm
Seeing the creation process in real time was very enlightening, going through the steps and following the process rather than how I may have worked in the past.
I think was a highly valuable course for anyone wanting to learn the art of writing music. It was very genre agnostic, making it suitable for a wide range of people wanting to learn to write music.
There were plenty of opportunities to try things out and carry out exercises using your own themes and motifs, harmonic progressions, rhythms and so on.
I am now going to be looking at a course on Film, TV, and Video Game Music and Production by Steven Melin who wrote the book (paid link) ‘The Family First Composer’ that I wrote a review on some time ago.
